An anonymous sender sent a suspicious envelope containing white powder and an apparent death threat to Republican Senator Rand Paul's house, prompting the FBI and Capitol Hill police to initiate an investigation.

An adviser to Paul told Politico that the letter, which was sent to the senator's home in Kentucky on Monday, is now being investigated for hazardous substances, while the senator himself confirmed receipt of the package in a tweet later that evening.

“These threats are very serious to me. It is reprehensible that Twitter encourages C-list celebrities to incite violence against me and my family, as he has been a frequent victim of violence,” he said.
