During her first meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US Vice President Kamala Harris "suo moto" spoke to Pakistan's role in terrorism, saying that terror groups were operating in the country and urging Islamabad to take action so that it did not jeopardize America and India's security.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Modi met with Vice President Harris at the White House. They decided to strengthen the Indo-US strategic alliance and discussed global topics of mutual importance, such as threats to democracy, Afghanistan, and the Indo-Pacific.

When asked if Pakistan's role in terrorism came up during her meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said, "When the issue of terrorism came up, the Vice President suo moto referred Pakistan's role in that regard (of terrorism)."

Harris, according to Shringla, said that terror groups were active in Pakistan.

"She urged Pakistan to take steps so that the US and India's security would not be jeopardized. Shringla said she agreed with the Prime Minister's briefing on cross-border terrorism and the reality that India has been a victim of terrorism for decades, and the need to rein in and closely monitor Pakistan's assistance for such terrorist organizations.

According to Harris, it is the responsibility of the two countries to protect democracies in the best interests of their respective peoples.

"As the world's democracies face threats, it is critical that we defend democratic ideas and institutions both within our own countries and globally. And that we continue to do what we need to do at home to strengthen democracies and that it is incumbent on our governments to safeguard democracies in the best interests of our people, she said.

Their encounter takes place a day before Modi's first bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden and the Quad Leaders' Summit, which will take place at the White House on Friday.
