Before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure, Manchester United players frequently thought they gained more from Cristiano Ronaldo than the 48-year-old. The Norwegian was sacked on Sunday, less than 24 hours after Manchester United was humiliated by Watford. And Ed Woodward and the Glazers are now on the lookout for a temporary substitute.

Manchester United was outplayed by Watford on Saturday, with Donny van de Beek providing the sole ray of hope on an otherwise bleak afternoon.

And Solskjaer has now been relieved of his duties, with the club announcing his resignation in the following statement: "Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has resigned as Manager."

"Ole will always be a Manchester United legend, and we regret having to make this painful decision."

"While the last few weeks have been frustrating, they should not overshadow the three years he has spent laying the groundwork for long-term success."

"Ole departs with our heartfelt appreciation for his courageous efforts as Manager and our best wishes for the future."

"His place in club history will always be safe, not just for his achievements as a player, but also as a fantastic guy and Manager who provided us with numerous memorable moments."
