Stephanie Frappart will be the first woman to referee a FIFA World Cup match involving men.

On December 1, the French official will oversee the group stage match between Costa Rica and Germany. In doing so, she will become the first woman in the 92-year history of the World Cup to referee a match.

This is not Frappart's debut album. In 2021, she became the first female referee to oversee a men's World Cup qualifying match when she oversaw the Netherlands versus Latvia.

She was selected as one of three female referees for the World Cup in May, alongside Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan.

The match between Costa Rica and Germany will be one of the most significant remaining group-stage contests.

Germany must win to have any chance of advancing to the World Cup's round of 16; they are currently last in Group E. Costa Rica needs at least a draw to have a realistic chance of advancing, although both teams' chances depend on the outcome between Spain and Japan.
