The Biden administration is preparing to announce fresh sanctions against its rival Russia, accusing the country of cyber attack and election interference.
According to a White House official, the White House plans to sanction the Kremlin for the cyberattack known as SolarWinds Attack. The US accuses Russia of orchestrating the attack.
Russian hackers are believed to have infected widely used software with malicious code that enabled them to access the networks of at least nine agencies, part of what US officials believe was an operation aimed at mining the secrets of the American government.
A White House official, who was not authorized to discuss, revealed the news on the condition of anonymity.
The sanctions are expected to be announced on Thursday, according to the official.
It is not clear, however, what kinds of actions are to be taken. The officials suggested the actions can be both seen and unseen.
