Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to head a major Western capital, has been re-elected as the mayor of London.

With 42 per cent turn out, Sadiq secured himself as the mayor again. The election yielded tighter-than-expected results as Sadiq had scored his victory in 2016 elections with 55.2 per cent of the vote against Shaun Bailey.

“I am deeply humbled by the trust Londoners have placed in me to continue leading the greatest city on earth,” Khan said, who focused his campaign on creating jobs in the city of nine million.

The 50-year old has promised to build bridges between the communities and the government in his second term.

In his victory speech, Sadiq reminisced his young days:

“I grew up on a council estate, a working-class boy, a child of immigrants, but I’m now the mayor of London,” he said, calling himself as “a Londoner through and through”.
