Due to a winter storm, ERCOT, the Texas utility supplier, forecasted increased energy demand until Sunday.

Frozen precipitation could cause local disruptions, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which has issued a "winter weather watch" through Sunday.

Last year, the state's electric infrastructure was paralyzed by a fatal deep freeze, leaving millions without power in subzero conditions.

"With frozen precipitation, there is always a chance for local outages caused by things like ice on wires or fallen tree limbs," ERCOT said in an emailed statement.

ERCOT has requested state environmental authorities to allow power plants to violate their air pollution restrictions so that they may stay online till Sunday to satisfy projected high demand.

"It will exercise its enforcement discretion in analyzing generation facility pollution exceedances," the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) warned ERCOT.

Peak demand is expected to grow from around 49,660 megawatts (MW) on Wednesday to around 65,736 MW on Thursday and 71,890 MW on Friday, according to ERCOT's website.
