Almost 2,000 new Covid infections reported daily in China for the first time in two years, according to the country's Health Ministry

Coronavirus incidences in China have reached a two-year high, with health officials reporting over 2,000 new illnesses across the country, including 20 in Beijing.

The country's National Health Commission said that China's mainland reported 1,807 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Saturday and 131 imported cases on Sunday.

Among the new local illnesses, 1,412 were recorded in Jilin province. China ordered a lockdown of the provincial capital Changchun's nine million citizens last Friday in response to a new rise in COVID-19 cases in the area attributable to the highly contagious omicron strain.

Apart from Changchun, the latest lockdowns include Yucheng in Shandong province, which has a population of 500,000.

Apart from Jilin, the Commission documented 175 cases in Shandong, 62 in Guangdong, 39 in Shaanxi, 33 in Hebei, 23 in Jiangsu, and 17 in Tianjin. Additionally, Beijing recorded 20 cases.

Meanwhile, officials in Hong Kong confirmed 27,647 additional Covid-19 cases, including 11,858 positive cases, according to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post on Sunday.

The paper stated that the former British colony also recorded 87 deaths from COVID, bringing the total to 3,729.
