A 17-year-old boy of Tampa, Florida has been charged in massive Twitter hack which includes the accounts of prominent politicians, celebrities, and technology moguls to scam people around the globe out of more than $100,000 in Bitcoin, authorities said on Friday.

The boy is in jail and facing 30 felony counts for allegedly orchestrating the massive Twitter hack that affected many high-profile figures, including Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Kanye West, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden to promote a bitcoin scam.

The tweets offered to send $2,000 for every $1,000 sent to an anonymous Bitcoin address.

WFLA reported the boy was booked into jail on Friday at 6:30 a.m. local time, following the investigation conducted by the FBI and the Department of Justice.

Despite the arrest, the Attorney's Office implied that the stolen money may not be recoverable, saying that "as a cryptocurrency, Bitcoin is difficult to track and recover if stolen in a scam."
