At least two dozen patients at a Rhode Island respiratory rehabilitation center were hospitalized Thursday night after a fire broke out at the facility, reports said.

The blaze started on the third floor of Genesis Respiratory and Rehabilitation Center in Coventry at about 9 p.m. and was confined to one room, WLNE reported, citing fire officials.

The facility’s sprinkler system helped extinguish the flames, but smoke still spread throughout the whole building, the report said.

Twenty-four patients were treated at local hospitals and others in the facility, which houses 100 people, were forced to relocate due to damage, Coventry Fire Chief Frank Brown told WPRI.

Ambulances from at least four separate departments responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
