Trump intensifies attacks on Justice Department following his indictment

Former President Donald Trump used his first public appearance since his federal indictment to escalate his assaults on the Justice Department, accusing prosecutors, without evidence, of a politically motivated effort to prevent him from regaining the presidency.

Saturday at the Georgia state Republican convention, Trump alleged that President Joe Biden, a Democrat, orchestrated the criminal charges to undermine his main political rival's presidential campaign and to divert attention away from federal and congressional investigations into Biden's son.

There is no evidence to substantiate Trump's claims. The Justice Department asserts that all investigative decisions are made without regard to partisan politics, and Biden has stated that he will not participate in the Trump investigation.

Trump told the crowd of local party officials, "The ridiculous and baseless indictment of me by the Biden administration's armed department of injustice will go down as one of the most heinous power abuses in the history of our country."

This cruel persecution is an affront to justice.

His remarks occurred one day after prosecutors unsealed a 37-count indictment against him, alleging he mismanaged classified documents containing some of the nation's most sensitive security secrets after he left the White House in 2021.

Prosecutors allege that the former president knew he should not have retained certain materials, including documents about the U.S. nuclear program and domestic vulnerabilities to a potential attack.

The 49-page indictment also described two instances in which Trump allegedly shared classified information with individuals who were not authorized to receive it, as well as efforts to obstruct government investigators attempting to retrieve the materials.

The indictment of a former U.S. president on federal charges is unprecedented in American history and comes at a time when Trump is the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president in 2020.

Trump told Politico on Saturday that he will continue his presidential campaign even if convicted.

The charges assure that the case will be the focal point of the nomination contest for the party. Most of Trump's rivals responded by accusing the Justice Department of political prejudice, reflecting their apprehension of alienating Trump's core supporters, an estimated 30% of the Republican electorate.

Tuesday, a day before his 77th birthday, he is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in the case in Miami.

Trump portrayed his campaign to return to the White House as part of an "epic struggle" to defeat "sinister forces" that, according to him, posed a greater threat to the nation than foreign adversaries such as Russia, North Korea, and Iran.

"Consider that: from the inside is worse than from the outside," he said.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed two special counsels to independently investigate the management of classified records by Trump and Biden, who discovered documents at his residence and former office at a think tank.

Despite legal experts ' assertions to the contrary, Trump attempted to equate the investigation into his conduct with Biden's. According to the indictment, for more than a year, Trump resisted efforts by the National Archives to retrieve all of the records he retained and concealed documents from his attorneys and investigators. According to Garland, Biden's counsel informed the National Archives and the Justice Department of the discovery of classified documents. The Justice Department has not stated whether or not Biden will be indicted.

"Biden has not been charged. "What he did is awful," Trump said. He referred to the special counsel who indicted him, Jack Smith, as a "thug" and demanded the removal of those investigating him. "This is a sick hive of people that requires urgent cleaning. With acclaim, he added, "Get 'em out!"

Trump told the Georgia audience that the "joke of an indictment" would bolster his support within the party, similar to how charges in New York in March over hush-money payments to a porn star boosted his standing in primary polls.

The only benefit is that my poll numbers have skyrocketed.

It was unclear to which poll results he referred.
